![]() I got started making these when I went by an eyeglass store with my upcycled eyeglass case (made using fabric from old clothes and a paper towel tube) and asked the owner if he wanted to sell them. He declined, explaining that people expected a free eyeglass case when they bought glasses, but said he often had requests for a double eyeglass case from people who wanted to carry around their glasses and reading glasses (or sunglasses) in one compact case. "If you can design one of those, come back to me!" he said. After numerous experiments, I came up with a case that is compact yet roomy, and practical yet adorable! It's a bit more complicated to make than the typical DIY eyeglass case, but (in my opinion) the added functionality is worth it. "Once you realize what you are, there's nothing left but gratitude and laughter." Don’t know if I’ve truly realized what I am yet, but I do find myself bubbling over with laughter and gratitude these days. On Saturday my whole New York family plus Mark’s parents (who flew in for the occasion, G-d bless them) were called up to the Torah in synagogue so the Rabbi could say a special blessing over Tucker & ceremonially bestow upon him his Hebrew name: Haran, in honor of a favorite and lovely Israeli cousin who passed away shortly before Tucker’s birth. ![]() As if that weren't enough naches... as of this week my sister and I are living together (with children) in our parents’ beach house for the summer. It’s hard to say who is enjoying it more: our kids or us. Well, that’s not true, there’s nothing quite like the joy of a child. Oliver is so happy being independent and enjoying his peers and his outdoor life here that he has lost all desire to spend hours a day watching video game walkthroughs on youtube. A minor miracle! And my nephew Syrus in the sand… well, the only really apt comparison is to a pig in s**t. (Sorry.) Jody and I do come pretty close though, despite my chronic pain & fatigue & her pregnancy discomfort& fatigue. Being buoyed by waves while floating in the ocean is certainly the antithesis of stress. Being warmed by the sun and cooled by sea breezes while lounging in beach chairs and lazily conversing with friends is pretty restorative too. And then there’s the added bonus of being almost constantly entertained by the hilarities that come out of 3-year-olds’ mouths. Some choice examples? Syrus’ takes (on successive days) on Jody’s pregnancy: And finally: with my mom's old Singer sewing machine & my fabric stash in the house, I’ve been having quite a field day looking for gaps to fill in my wardrobe & accessories collection! So far I’ve made 2 beach cover-ups, this one (photo below) using the Palm Beach Tunic pattern from Built by Wendy Dresses & 2 yards of cotton gauze. I'm quite proud of the finishing: my doodle, drawn on fabric & then embroidered using a simple back stitch. Hope everyone has a wonderful 4th of July, and joy and laughter as often as possible! Thanks for reading and please comment! I’d love to hear what made you laugh or glow this week.
